What do I need to go fishing

I recently received this letter form a visitor which prompted me to write this article. This information refers to fishing waterways in the UK : I have never been fishing and would like some information on how to go about it. I read online that afternoon tickets cost £5 for 2 rods, are there any other costs? Do I need license to enter the lake? Are there staff that can help those who have never had any experience in fishing.

Licence's

You need a valid Environment Agency Rod Licence if you are aged 12 or over and fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt or eel in England, Wales, and the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland. The Rod Licence does not automatically give you the right to fish. You will also need permission as well as the relevant permits from the land/ fishery owner of the venue you intend to fish. Many fishing clubs run a permit system where you pay an annual fee for your club card. This club card will usually contain your photograph as well as other details. This club card should be carried together with a valid rod licence. Environment Agency representatives (bailiffs) can ask to see your rod licence. If you fish any water without a rod licence and you are caught you could be taken to court and fined.
